Overture To War was commissioned by the Missouri Music Educators Association, St. Louis Metro District No. 8 for the All Suburban Orchestra performance of November 9th 2013. This piece Chronicles the beginning of World War 2. The beginning of the piece is a call to arms as President Roosevelt summoned the nation to war with his radio address following the Pearl Harbor attack of December 7th, 1941.

The Call to arms is filled with an angry tension that begins in the bass and celli and spreads throughout the orchestra. At letter D, the theme is repeated and layered as the resolution of the American people is portrayed through the somber tones of this section. Letter G brings a return to anger first seen in the opening of the piece but re-scored in a different orchestration. Letter L begins the remembrance section of the piece. This represents the American people understanding the cost that the war will put upon them. This cost could mean losing their children and loved ones. This section has a simple hymn like theme as parents think back on the childhoods of their children and realize they may not return. Letter P regains the original anger at being attacked and the piece ends with America rushing off to war. The orchestration of the ending suggests that America knows it will be victorious but not without cost.
