Discovery is a through-composed work for string orchestra that was commissioned by the 2014-2015 Downers Grove District 99 Orchestra under the direction of Jennifer Mullen.
This piece is written in memory of Robert J Lapen who was of father two students in the orchestra. Mr. Lapen was a very intelligent man with multiple degrees from Stanford and Harvard. He was very inquisitive and enjoyed fixing things.
Discovery begins with an Elegaic theme that is first stated with a cello solo. The theme has an inquisitive nature and is the source material of the entire work. This theme is stated in its entirety only once; from measures 45-56 when all viola, celli and bass play it prominently. After this, discovery becomes the method for manipulating the theme. Fragments are seen throughout different settings and an odd time meter of 6/8 and 2/4 time dominate. The tone of the piece suggests discovering what is next and the piece ends with an emphatic beauty that suggests the continual discovery of what lies ahead beyond the realm of what is currently known.
