Duet of Duel
The Duet of Duel is a virtuoso violin duet with a grade 3 level string orchestra. This piece was commissioned by Sofia Pelletier and the 2018 Singapore American School Middle School Orchestra. I was conducting at the school during the Fall of 2017 and was introduced to two fabulous middle school violinists. Both were named Sean and both were brilliant. Sofia and I decided to commission a piece to feature these two extraordinary young men with their orchestra and thus The Duet of Duel was born.
This piece depicts a maestro violinist at home with their orchestra performing technical passages and delighting audiences each time his/her amazing skills are on display. Suddenly, a new violinist appears! This violinist is just as amazing as the original violinist and has a wonderful brilliance to their playing. The new violinist enters with a mesmerizing cadenza and proceeds to play with the orchestra in a most vibrant fashion. Abruptly, the original violinist interrupts the playing of the newcomer with a succession of ominous multiple stops. At this,
musical anger boils and a fight sequence ensues with each player attempting to better the other. Suddenly both players happen to come to rest on a beautiful harmony and discover that they can actually play together and sound strangely beautiful. Once the players realize this, a sadness comes over them with the understanding that they could have been musical friends the entire time. Once their “lament” ends both return to the opening theme together and end in a flash of brilliance becoming musical friends for life!
